30th June 2019 – Inheritance from God brings freedom.

June 27, 2019 Pastor Matt Bishop

In today’s Old Testament reading Elisha asks Elijah for a double portion of his spirit just before Elijah is taken up into heaven (2 Kings 2:1-14). In essence, Elisha is speaking the language of inheritance.  When we are baptised we are made brothers and sisters of Christ (Gal 3:25-27; Romans 8:15-17).  Tempting as it is to ask for more inheritance – maybe a double portion – what God gives us is entirely sufficient.  It doesn’t lack anything (see the part from Luther’s Small Catechism below).  It doesn’t need anything more.  It’s sufficient.  That does not mean its not generous!  It’s impossible this side of eternity to fully grasp the freedom that Christ has given us (‘For freedom you have been set free’ – Gal 5:1), but that doesn’t change the reality of that what he has given us.  Today we’ll unpack what that means for our day to day life together and in the world.
