It’s a strange sort of verdict. Normally it’s guilty or not guilty… or pass or fail. Not light or darkness. The verdict for you as a believer in Jesus Christ is one of light. Out of this comes a life of living in Christ and his truth (John 3:21). But darkness abounds. It has not understood him (John 1:5). And it is hard not to find that menacing. Do we despair? Humanely that is our likely inclination. Yet Christ gives us reason not to. While we are to take the darkness seriously, we live our lives out of Christ’s light and the great promise and reason behind it: that all who believe in his son’s ‘giving’ (his death) will not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16), because ‘God did not send his son into the world to condemn it, but to save the world through him’ (John 3:17).
