Jesus’ walk to Emmaus with two disciples is one of Scripture’s ‘heavy lifters’. Not only is the resurrected Christ present, but he is the teacher. Christ’s topic is no less that his own fulfilment of the Old Testament promises of God’s forgiveness through his suffering and entering into glory (Luke 24: 25-26). Christ’s teaching causes the disciples’ hearts to burn! But Jesus is also the host of their meal. When he breaks the bread he is revealed as the crucified and risen Messiah (Luke 24:30-31). And today, all this is ‘Given for you…'(Luke 22:19) Therefore, do our hearts not burn too as we trust the promises of his word and receive them at the Lord’s Supper?
