In the Authorised King James translation “He stinketh” is what Martha protests as Jesus orders the stone to be rolled away from the tomb holding Lazarus’ now rapidly decomposing body.  The old english of “He stinketh” sounds a little amusing today. Yet death remains anything but.  Put simply, death does stink.  It is the wages of sin (Romans 6:23).  In raising Lazarus Jesus showed his power over sin. In his resurrection he has handed over to all his believers a full share in his resurrection (John 11:25-26).  What remains for each of us is this question: “Do you believe this?” (John 11:26b)
